Pillar designed in the motif of Hakata-ori (weave)

  • This pillar is made by combining a lot of kinds of tiles in order to display “Kenjou-gara (pattern)”, which is a representative pattern of the “Hakata-ori (weave).” It is a traditional craftwork produced in Hakata-city.
  • The origin of Hakata-ori is said that Mitsuda Yazaemon, a Hakata merchant, in the era of Kamakura (1185-1333 A.D.) brought back the textile technics from China (Sung-Dynasty,960-1279 A.D.), and afterwards add his original technics into it to have the craftwork more advanced. The craftwork has a rich history of approximate 770 years.
  • In Edo era, Kuroda, the warlord of Chikuzen (Northern west part of present Fukuoka pref.), presented one to Tokugawa Shogunate government. Since then, it has been widely known as “Hakata-kenjou (present to an aristocratic people)” or “kenjou-gara (pattern).”

Wall made in the image of “Hakata-bei (wall)

  • This wall is made using old tiles and stones as one of materials to imitate “Hakata-bei,” which is an age-old construction of Hakata-city.
  • Originally, Hakata-bei was founded by mixing and rubbing rubbles such as broken tiles or stones left in the ruins of wars as one of the construction materials when people tried to have Hakata’s town revive during the Sengoku-era (the age of wars: 15 - 16C).
  • There is a restored part of the wall in Kushida-shrine (Fukuoka-city, Hakata-ward), Syofuku-temple (Fukuoka-city, Hakata-ward).
